Green your laundry with Method Laundry Detergent

August 21st, 2010 No comments

I met what is one of my top favorite green products I’ve ever seen today. It’s useful, affordable and cool. Yes, cool laundry detergent. There, I said it. Introducing Method Laundry Detergent (At least introducing it to me :) .

I saw Method Laundry Detergent in the store for the first time today. It was noticeably smaller than the other containers, it had a pump dispenser, was extremely concentrated (8x more than other detergents), it was made from 95% plant material and the container is made from 50% recycled plastic.

It’s even got a colored ring on the bottom of the pump straw so you can line up that last pump of liquid cleansing goodness. Such thoughtful engineers.

As I was staring at this little miracle of a product, I thought…

A small container + super concentrated means more product per truck which = less fossil fuel to ship more product. Nice.

Pump dispenser = less mess. The floor will thank me.

Made from 95% plant material. I will almost be able to eat my organic cotton shirts after I wash them with Method. I said “almost”.

The container (and the pump) is made from 50% recycled plastic. Awesome.

How much is it you ask? About 32 cents a load or 8 bucks for the small size. There is a larger size, but I didn’t see that one. That one is $15 for 50 loads. A bit of a savings.

Treehhugger has more information on Method.

Method Laundry site. Watch the “how to” video. Again, awesome. This time for the subtle sense of humor.

I need to go fold now :) I wish they could make folding cool too.

Shark-fin soup – Not in Hawaii

July 26th, 2010 No comments

Hawaii is the first in the world to ban the possession, sale or distribution of shark fins. That means no more shark-fin soup in Hawaii.

With any luck the ban of shark fins will reach far beyond the Hawaiian islands so the massive decline of the shark population can begin to make a come back.

BP proves their insensitivity yet again

July 17th, 2010 No comments

Did no one tell BP that they are not high on the favorable scale??

Gulf coast fishermen angry over oil claims ruling

BILOXI, Mississippi (Reuters) – Fishermen in Mississippi say they are angry that under the terms of BP’s $20 billion oil spill fund, money they earn doing clean-up will be subtracted from their claim against the company.

BP executive says he’s ‘proud’ of company response. BP executive is also an idiot.

June 23rd, 2010 No comments

In what can only be a comment made due to consuming a disproportionate amount of anti-represents or arrogance, BP’s COO Doug Suttles said he was proud of his company’s actions in response to the oil spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico. Maybe someone should tell him that there is still 60,000 barrels of oil a day leaking into the Gulf due to BP’s actions.

At least this time there was no mention of the “little people”.

Jersey Doesn’t Stink (Part II) and CSA’s

June 21st, 2010 No comments

Remember it’s the “Garden State” for a reason. New Jersey doesn’t stink (The stretch of NJ Turnpike by the airport doesn’t count here)!

Proving New Jersey is the Garden State
To prove it, here’s a list of CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture, Buying Clubs, organic farms, permaculture, biodynamic farming) from https://www.greenpeople.org/csa.htm. Visit the site for CSAs in states other than New Jersey too.

(New) Jersey Doesn’t Stink

June 2nd, 2010 No comments

As a New Jersey resident, I had to give this one a plug. Jersey Doesn’t Stink.

For you Jerseyans out there, you can get a bumper sticker, t-shirt and other Jersey Doesn’t Stink paraphernalia.

Proof that NJ doesn’t stink
Piping plovers, horseshoe crabs, least terns, and red knots are among the rarities awaiting New Jersey ecotourists.

Oil spill in Gulf of Mexico as of April 30

April 29th, 2010 No comments

The oil spill in Gulf of Mexico five times worse than thought originally. The explosion happened April 20 and has been leaking ever since. It’s an awful tragedy for the BP workers on the drilling rig. And now the oil is threatening to cause havoc to the Louisiana shore. We can only imagine how much it has hurt the critters in the ocean already.

First U.S. offshore wind farm off Cape Cod

April 28th, 2010 No comments

Green and clean energy is not without debate. It seems that we want everything to be magically green without impact to anything else. That’s simply not possible. Case in point, the first U.S. offshore wind farm off Cape Cod, Mass.

We might have to compromise sunrises for energy independence and easier breathing. Take pictures of the horizon while you still can.

WASHINGTON — Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on Wednesday approved the nation’s first offshore wind farm, the 130-turbine Cape Wind project off Cape Cod, Mass. , and said that the power of strong winds over the Atlantic Ocean would be an important part of the U.S. drive to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Other places that might see wind farms

Offshore wind farms have been proposed in proposed off Rehoboth Beach, Del. ; Boston ; Atlantic Beach , Atlantic City and Avalon in New Jersey , in North Carolina’s Eastern Pamlico Sound; in Lake Erie off Cleveland ; off Block Island and Sakonnet in Rhode Island , and off Galveston, Texas .

Threat of new, larger Icelandic volcano eruption looms

April 21st, 2010 No comments

Looks like there might be more pressure building up in the Earth’s core….

Scientists fear tremors at the Eyjafjallajokull (ay-yah-FYAH-lah-yer-kuhl) volcano could trigger an even more dangerous eruption at the nearby Katla volcano — creating a worst-case scenario for the airline industry and travelers around the globe.

A Katla eruption would be 10 times stronger and shoot higher and larger plumes of ash into the air than its smaller neighbor, which has already brought European air travel to a standstill for five days and promises severe travel delays for days more.

The two volcanoes are side by side in southern Iceland, about 12 miles (20 kilometers) apart and thought to be connected by a network of magma channels.
