Looking for plans for summer solstice 2010? If you like Bamboo and live in the New York City area you might want to check out: “Doug + Mike Starn on the Roof: Big BambĂș”

“Doug + Mike Starn on the Roof: Big BambĂș” is a growing architectural structure made entirely out of bamboo and nylon. Its scheduled to run until the end of October, 2010. Admission is suggested at $20 a head.

Here’s a picture I took when I was at the Met this past week.

Check on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s web site for more information.

The History Of Earth Day & How You Can Get Involved

April 21st, 2010 No comments

Earth Day is turning 40 this year, and we probably need it more than we ever have.

A quick look at the article on Yahoo!

On April 22, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day will be celebrated from coast-to-coast; a day which was first realized by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson who wanted to find a way to increase environmental awareness and to promote urgently needed federal legislation to deal with an alarming ecological crisis.

And the link to the remainder of the article. History of Earth Day and how you can get involved.

Natural sunscreen and lip balm

April 16th, 2010 No comments

I hate getting burnt. It has happened on too many occasion, especially this time of year when it’s just getting nice outside and you don’t expect to get burnt. It just happened again last weekend when I surfed for about an hour.

Anyway, I thought I’d share natural sunscreen and lip balm that I have used in the past, that when I remember to put on, has worked pretty darn well. Especially the sunscreen.

All Terrain Sunblock TerraSport Spf 30 – 3 oz

All Terrain Performance Sunblock Lip Balm – SPF 25, 0.15 oz

Don’t get burnt.

Juice this: carrot juice, apple juice and orange juice … or carrot apple orange juice!

Organic juicing: Carrot, kiwi, ginger, pineapple juiceI started juicing about a month ago with mostly organic fruit. I guess you can call it “organic juicing” if there is such a thing. I wanted to give my health a little more attention than what I have been giving it for the past year or so. So now I’m exploring the health benefits of juicing. I think I’m getting the benefits already.

Juicing health benefits: antioxidants
Check this out, I went to my dentist this past week for a cleaning. My dentist is now giving antioxidant scans. He’s an innovative guy. Here’s how it works. You put your palm up a little machine that measures the skin carotenoid levels in your body. It comes back with reading of 1 – 50,000 plus.

I scored an ‘A’ (52,000), only the second ‘A’ they have ever had in the office. I didn’t ask how many people they scanned, I figured I’d quite while I was ahead. The point is, I scored really high! I’m attributing it to the juicing.

What am I juicing you ask?
I’m juicing everything. Well, not quite everything, but pretty close to it and I’m going to expand and explore more juicing combinations as well. Below is list of juices I have been working with. Keep in mind that each juice starts with the good old vegetable or fruit. There are no cans in my organic juicing recipes.

  • Apple juice
  • Pineapple juice
  • Orange juice
  • Ginger juice
  • Garlic juice
  • Pear juice
  • Bok choy juice
  • Cucumber juice
  • Salad green juice (they really aren’t all that juicy, but I had try it.)
  • Kiwi juice

I’ve also started combining blending and juicing. Things I’ve blended:

  • Bananas, sometimes frozen
  • Frozen blueberries
  • Frozen strawberries
  • Frozen raspberries
  • Bees pollen
  • Flax seed

I think that’s all. To be clear, the above are not the ingredients in ALL my juicing recipes and some combinations are much better than others. I’m merely stating the juicing ingredients for now. I have been tweeting about some of the better juicing recipes on my personal account if your are interested.

Below are a few of them in case you don’t feel like clicking through or if you don’t like Twitter. I understand your feelings on both the former and the latter.

  • Juice this: 3 kiwi, 1 big cucumber and half a pineapple. Add cantaloupe if you like melon, not too much, just enough for a hint of flavor.
  • Juice this: a bag of small carrots (you heard right) 2 granny smith apples, a chunk of ginger and squeeze half a lemon. Slammin’.
  • Juice this: 2 oranges, 2 mangoes, 1 cucumber, 2 granny smith apples. If you are adventurous juice a clove of garlic and a chuck of ginger.

I’m going to go juice now. I’m not sure what, but if it comes out good, it will be on Twitter. And maybe here too.

If you are looking to buy a juicer, take a look at the 2 juicers below.

What You Can do to Help Save the Environment

December 11th, 2009 1 comment

Here’s a list of what each of us can do everyday to help make the world better than how we found it yesterday.

  • Vote for politicians who protect the environment
  • Write letters to your local, state and federal representatives
  • Get to know your local politicians
  • Become an active member of an environmental organization
  • Buy organic
  • Use environmentally friendly household and outdoor products
  • Don’t litter
  • Don’t dump/allow hazardous runoff into the gutters
  • Change your car’s oil and keep the tires at the appropriate levels. This will aid in better gas mileage
  • Take mass transit when available
  • Don’t purchase products from companies who are known environmental offenders
  • Read the papers – be informed of what is on in your town, your state, your country and abroad.

Recycle your jeans, shoes and more at Macy’s and TerraCycle

December 10th, 2009 No comments

I went to Macy’s last Black Friday. On the way into the store were green bins to collect recyclables. Not cans or plastics, but jeans and shoes and other clothing items.

I try to give all my unwanted clothing that’s good shape to those who will benefit from it. I had nowhere to put the threadbare pants with the stain and the rip. Now I do thanks to Macy’s and TerraCycle.

TerraCycle collects and recycles just about everything and produces really cool things like backpacks, holiday bows and pencil cases. A green Christmas all around. Nice.

Organic Turkey?

November 22nd, 2009 No comments

A quick thought on Thanksgiving. In the spirit of “taking small green steps”, try putting one organic offering on the dinner table this thanksgiving for everyone to enjoy.

It’s probably one of the toughest Thanksgivings in a long time for many people, economically speaking. An organic turkey might be more money than you might want to pay for a bird, if that’s the case how about lower cost items like organic greens or organic cranberry sauce?

Happy Thanksgiving.
