Surfrider, Jim Moriarty, and Asbury Park, NJ

It’s been a week since the Surfrider Asbury Park Surf Clinic put on by the Jersey Shore Chapter of Surfrider. It was awesome as usual.

This was the third year for the event and had grown significantly in those 3 years! 170 tykes from all backgrounds, all ampted to ride waves. It was also the third consecutive year that I had the opportunity to pass on some stoke to the kids as an instructor. One of my young students this year was Courtney (We are on the front page of www.LocalSwell.com at the moment). Courtney is an aspiring pro surfer. Nice!

It was also a great experience to meet Jim Moriarty, Executive Director, Surfrider Foundation (Check out the Surfrider Blog that Jim put together), and Dith Pran whose life story can be seen in The Killing Fields (Rent it today!). Dith is now working for the New York Times as a photojournalist and dropped by to snap a few shots of Courtney and me (enter shameless plug here) and the other instructors and students.

To hear more on the clinic from Jim’s point of view, give the Surfrider Blog a read. He tells the story well…

I also had a chance to catch up with Jim later that evening at an after event. Nice to hear that he is a fan of the NJ Shore’s web site, as I (shameless plug #2!) had a good hand in putting this together.
