Wal-Mart plans to double its organic grocery offerings in the next month

Wal-Mart is opening its doors to organic food.

Stephen Quinn, vice president of marketing, said Wal-Mart would have 400 organic food items in stores this summer at the Wal-Mart price.

I’ve said that mainstreaming organics is a good move. Wholefoods is more of what I had in mind. Wal-Mart is something I never imagined. I would like to say this is good for organics, but I have a few concerns.

What will this do to the small health stores with the knowledge base in supplements? Will it run them out of business similar to what happened to main street stores around the country?

What about the history and struggle of organics? Will Wal-Mart wash them away?

And where will the organics come from? Eating organic means eating local as much as possible. Wal-Mart is going to buy in bulk based on price, not on principle.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is throwing its weight behind organic products, a move that experts say could have the same lasting effect on environmental practices that Wal-Mart has had on prices by forcing suppliers and competitors to keep up.
