Wal-Mart Pledges to Sell Sustainable Fish Products

I just read this is in the WWF May/June 2006 issue of “Focus”.

It looks like the WWF, Marine Stewardship Council, and Conservation International are working with Wal-Mart to sell sustainable fish. This applies to ALL fresh and frozen fish.

First - I had no idea they sold fish, nevermind fresh fish(?).

Second - who is buying fish at Wal-Mart?

Regardless. First they Wal-Mart is selling organics, then they put a wind farm on the roof of one of their stores, now they are selling sustainable fish products? What’s going on here?

If they weren’t the urban sprawlers/small town home wreckers that they are (they are desperately trying to change that image), I’d think, dare I say, Wal-Mart may do the environment good? Good on a sliding scale.

I admit the idea is flawed at best. But stick with me. A big company bringing sustainable living to mass America. I’m all for the little guys who are getting their hands dirty in the organic soil and the farmers, whose cow comes at the call of her name, but if big business is going to exist, isn’t it good if they give alternatives to selling high fructose this and partially hydrogenated that?

Ok, maybe it’s bitter sweet.
